We have tried our best to make a filter which would import data into the proper fields, however, when that was not possible we have concentrated on avoiding data loss; each data element is preserved although not necessarily in the correct fields. Users must review their records after importing and manually make any necessary changes and corrections. Here are some of the limitations of this filter: 1. Due to the inconsistent manner in which dates are presented, the year and date are usually imported into the Date field for journal articles, the end of the Book Title field for many book sections, the Notes field for many books and theses, and so forth. Users must manually move the year to the Year field, supplying the '19' or '20' as necessary for two-digit years. If the date is a six-digit figure, the last two digits may be interpreted as the month and moved into the Date field, when present. 2. Because the city and publisher data is not delimited, both are usually imported into the Publisher field. Users must manually move the city into the City field after importing. 3. Some records contain data characteristic of multiple reference types, thus, some journal article-like records may be imported as books or book sections, conference proceeding-like records as journal articles, and so forth. Reports can be journal articles, books, or reports (sometimes at the same time!) Users may wish to change the reference type after importing if the one assigned is not appropriate. SOME NOTES ON HOW THIS FILTER ASSIGNS REFERENCE TYPES BOOK: This is the default reference type. If a record does not meet the requirements of any of the other reference types, it is imported as a Book. BOOK SECTION: Records appear to be book sections usually have a 'Host Book Title' field. If this field is present the record is imported as a Book Section. EDITED BOOK: Records which have a `Series/Source/Book Author` containing the word "editor" are imported as edited books. JOURNAL ARTICLE: Any record with the word "Serial" appearing in the Document Type field is imported as a Journal Article. THESIS: Records with "Thesis/Dissertation" in the Document Type field are imported as theses. GeoRef the requirements of any of the other reference types, it is imported as a Book.
